ANNA

Walking into the main building on Monday, we could almost feel the tension. Nick had gotten the green light on the rescue mission to Argentina. Oliver would be leaving first. He’d head to Buenos Aires undercover as a political journalist following a story. He’d scout around the city and surrounds looking for Captain Moore and his team. Nick, Jared, Bex, and Jake would leave a day later.

Obviously, they would limit contact with Ollie and communication methods were being finalized. But if all went well, they would be home a few days later.

I knocked on Lilly’s office door. She had one of the two corner offices at the end of the hall.

“Come in.” Her voice was muffled, and I hesitated to just walk in. After a moment, I realized she would not have answered me if she was in a compromising position.

Stepping inside, my heart melted for my friend. Her head was buried in Oliver’s chest as he held her tight in his arms. His chin rested on the top of her head and his eyes were closed.

“I don’t mean to interrupt.” I closed the door behind me. “I came to check if you’re okay.”

Lilly pushed away from Oliver, and he let her go. She used the heels of hands to rub her eyes before she faced me.

Bloodshot blue eyes pierced me. “We’re going to have to pick up the training slack while they’re gone. How is your leg doing?”

My leg was healing faster than expected. Still. “I would rather not do hand-to-hand combat training. Or any of the outdoor survival stuff.”

Oliver nodded. “Let her do the pistol training. One appointment is a bunch of twenty somethings on a bachelor's weekend.”

“That seems like a really bad idea.”

“I told them that it's first thing Saturday morning, before anyone starts drinking.”

“Good.”

Lilly moved behind her huge desk. “I’ll reschedule all the hand-to-hand courses that I cannot do. And Scott said he would help too. You can handle the other shooting and knife training. We have a SWAT team coming in later in the week.”

“Lils.” I knew she was discussing work because even though Oliver was right in front of her, she was scared shitless. “How about a girl’s night later in the week. I’ll ask Mrs. S to watch the boys and we can do ice cream and Rom-Coms.”

I had offered to keep Jared’s son Cooper with me while the men were away. It gave Hope and Daniel some rest and meant I could lean on them when the need arose. Like when my friend needed a distraction from her husband being undercover in a foreign country with no back up and minimal contact.

“Where are we doing this sleepover?”

I rolled my eyes. Everyone knew Nick had made a point of making sure every item I owned was moved into his house. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that we were living together but I was definitely living in his house.

“Don’t be cute.” I nudged my shoulder into hers. “It doesn’t suit you.”

Oliver slung his arm around his wife.
